Facts About Recycling Paper

Of the 254 million tons of municipal solid waste that was generated in the United States in 2007, roughly 33% of that was paper and paperboard products. Paper materials are among the most recycled products in the U.S. In 2007 alone, Americans recycled more than half the paper and paperboard generated, totaling more than 45 million tons of paper recovery.

A 2008 stat shows the average amount of recycled paper per person in the United States was 340 pounds. And even though 2008 experienced a slight decline in the demand for paper, the year saw roughly a 57% paper-recovery rate, according to one report. One statistic shows more than 50% of the nation’s paper industry needs are met through the use of scrap paper.

Recycling paper preserves the environment. Reports reveal that recycling 1 ton of mixed paper can save the energy equivalent of 185 gallons of gasoline. Another statistic shows recycling the same amount of paper conserves 7,000 gallons of water, saves 17 trees and more than 3 cubic yards of landfill.

The American Forest & Paper Association has a goal to increase paper recycling to attain a 60% paper-recovery rate in 2012. Some feel this is a very attainable goal since the rate of paper recycling has typically grown steady each year. In fact, the association’s original goal was 55% paper recovery by 2012, but it exceeded that goal in 2007 with a 56% recovery rate.

This is great news for the environment since the Environmental Protection Agency reveals that recycling just 10 pounds of corrugated box reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 40 pounds. Curious about what types of paper products are made from Green paper-recycling efforts?
